Photos that inspired me

Artist Statement:
For this project we had to somehow make a mask made out of tracing paper, wire, and gel medium. I chose to do something out of the ordinary and did an alien like mask. This mask portrays the scary side to a person. It may not be pretty but we love that person regardless, especially if he/she is a part of the family or a close friend. I know in class I said it did not represent anything but a scary mask but this mask portrays a lot more than that and has a deeper meaning. This mask did take a little bit of time, I would say near 30-40 studio hours. It was an interesting and time consuming project. I know many people in my class did something nonrepresentational but I wanted to do something out of the box and have the mask represent something deeper.

On Longing Assignment

"Nostalgia can't be sustained without loss"
I chose this picture simply because they're my best friends. Leaving home and them was a really hard thing to do, both of these people have supported and loved me since day one. I have none both of them for almost ten years and nowadays that is really hard to find. We have made many happy and fun memories together and I am looking forward to making even more in the future.

"The souvenir reduces the public, monumental, and the three-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body"
I believe that this picture represents this quote very well. The picture contains all the aspects that the photo conveys. It contains monumental because a pumpkin is the main symbol for Halloween. The pumpkin itself is three-dimensional since it has length and depth. Lastly, it reduces the public into the miniature because I provide scale in the picture, which makes the pumpkin smaller, until I am not there.

"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy"
This picture was taken in Costa Rica, where family and I went on vacation for Christmas break around 3 years ago. As a family we travel around the world at least twice a year. This picture that I took is a souvenir to me because I was trying my hardest to get a really good photo of a butterfly and to me this is a "trophy" in that aspect, as well as a specimen since it is an animal.

"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience"
This post on Instagram is a photo collage of the many photos that I took when my family and I took a two week vacation to Canada. These objects/animals made my experience genuine and real, those memories that my family and I made will never be forgotten. This trip was one of my favorites by far!

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale"
I decided to choose this picture because it shows a very good representation of scale. This dinosaur statue was in a park somewhere in Costa Rica. Without myself in the picture it may be hard to determine how large the statue may be. However, having my body in front of the dinosaur just shows the viewer that this is a very big statue.
