3D to 2D Image

For the last assignment I decided to turn my masked identity photo in a scary movie theater poster. I thought this was a good idea since I could easily see this photo as a poster for a movie, especially having an eerie background and an alien mask. This poster was made with photoshop and illustrator.

Memento Project

Title: In Loving Memory
Dimensions: 6 inches in width and 9 inches in length
Materials:
-wire
-purple ink
-hot glue

For this assignment we had to construct a "souvenir" that was from a memory that we had in our lives. I chose to make a butterfly since it represents my grandmother's favorite animal and it portrays her as well. My grandmother passed away three years ago and thought I would make something in her memory. The butterfly is a symbol of her since she was so gentle and kind. A butterfly does not have one mean bone in it's body, neither did my grandmother. I had a deep, emotional connection with my grandmother and I miss her everyday! I know she is in a better place and I am happy to have had made this in her honor. The butterfly took less than 20 studio hours.

For this next assignment we had to construct a map of anything. I took this assignment literally and did a map of Banff, Canada since I went to Canada for ten days and absolutely loved it ! This project is constructed out of cardboard and spray paint. This was a project that I had fun with since it reminded me of such a fun memory. This project took me over 40 studio hours but it did not really feel like it took that long. In Canada they have hills and mountains, as well all know, and I wanted to somehow construct that. So for height for the hills I used paper straws to give the hills more height. Also the lake that is shaped like a wolf is actually the exact shape of the lake that I saw in Canada.

Soap Carving

Title: Two turtles
Dimensions: 8 inches in length and 3 inches in width
Materials:
-soap carving tools
-2 bars of soap

 In Process Photos

For this assignment we had to pick an animal and carve it twice out of soap. I chose a sea turtle and tried my hardest to get everything proportioned and detailed. This was a really difficult assignment but I think I managed it pretty well. This assignment took me well over 40 studio hours, I would suggest picking an easier animal if you would like to try this assignment! For the first attempt (grey soap) it was difficult trying to replicate the exact animal. When a mistake is made it was very difficult to try to fix. However, carving the soap and carefully chipping away soap inch by inch is the way to actually do it correctly. The second attempt only took a few hours since I managed to get the process.

*Also I am very sorry for not adding final photos of my two turtles, my professor was late on the grading and I left before she graded them *

Balsa Wood Sculptures

Title: Symmetry and Focal Point
Dimensions: Focal Point sculpture: 6 inches by 7 inches, Symmetry sculpture: 8 inches by 5 inches
Materials:
-Balsa Wood
-White Paper
-Thin nails
-Masking Tape
- Wood Glue
- Packing Tape

In Process Photos

Final Outcome

These two sculptures are constructed out of balsa wood mainly. For the one that consists of the masking tape ball the sculpture represents focal point. Focal point is the main thing in an sculpture or art piece that you focus on. The ball in the middle constructs this idea. The second sculpture with the stacked up wood is representing symmetry, since everything is symmetrical and equal. The wood was very easy to work with and cut. I would say that both of these sculptures took 30 studio hours in total. It was not a hard assignment but thinking of an idea was the hardest part.

Masking Tape Shoes

Title: Van Masking Tape Shoes
Dimensions: 10 inches in length and 3 inches in width
Materials:
-Masking Tape
-X-acto knife
-Cutting Mat
-Scissors
-Pair of Sneakers

Final Outcome

                                    In Process Photos

These shoes are solely constructed in masking tape, nothing else. These shoes are a representation of my blue size seven van sneakers. The details within the sneakers are everything that I saw within the sneaker itself, which include the tongue of the shoe, various marks and textures, as well as the textured bottom. My process consisted of making the bottom of the sneaker first and building up. I had a strong base since I covered it with a thick layer of masking tape and tried to smooth it to the best that I could. The inspiration was from Vans since I really like the sneakers and thought it was a good idea if I did a shoe that I like and try to create. This piece was completely finished in 40 studio hours, it was not easy to do! The sneakers that I used to try this assignment are not wearable anymore but this piece represents the travel and footsteps I have taken in my life.

Photos that inspired me

Artist Statement:
For this project we had to somehow make a mask made out of tracing paper, wire, and gel medium. I chose to do something out of the ordinary and did an alien like mask. This mask portrays the scary side to a person. It may not be pretty but we love that person regardless, especially if he/she is a part of the family or a close friend. I know in class I said it did not represent anything but a scary mask but this mask portrays a lot more than that and has a deeper meaning. This mask did take a little bit of time, I would say near 30-40 studio hours. It was an interesting and time consuming project. I know many people in my class did something nonrepresentational but I wanted to do something out of the box and have the mask represent something deeper.
